Discussion Paper on the Southeast Asia Market

Discussion Paper Commissioned

The Asia Pacific Trade Council commissioned IB Robertson Advisory Inc. to prepare a discussion paper to provide information on trade and investment related issues, opportunities and challenges for British Columbia in the Southeast Asia market. The report was completed in April 2007.

Opinions and comments expressed in the discussion paper are those of the consultant and do not represent the position of the Province of British Columbia and/or the Asia Pacific Trade Council.

Focus of the Discussion Paper

The discussion paper focuses mainly on the six largest markets of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN): Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. These are the economic drivers of the region, although other ASEAN members were also kept in mind.

The region has a population of around 570 million people and a combined GDP of US$1,064 billion in 2006, roughly half of China and larger than those of India or South Korea.

Key Recommendations from the Discussion Paper

  1. Allow companies and sectoral groups or clusters to decide on trade and investment promotion priorities.
  2. Raise mutual awareness between B.C. and the Southeast Asia markets as laid out in the Asia Pacific Initiative.
  3. Use the vibrant industry sector clusters in B.C. as leading players in the market thrust into Southeast Asia.
  4. Establish a strong, well-organized, proactive and well-funded B.C. government entity to promote and support personal relationships at senior levels and manage the trade promotion effort.
